you were always the one idealistic
walking miles of poetry
with jonathan livingston seagull in your breast
or joni mitchell on your lips

sunny day
you owned your own name
the den that could never quite house you
released its grip

we sailed our twenties-together
you birthed my fascination of herbs and midwifery
led my maiden voyage to the ship of fools
always the one i followed around

you tasted the road
a mosaic life, swinging your hips
through the gem stone heart break
past the English Manor
and frolicking the playwright
to finally ripen your fig in Big Sur

you blossomed babies and college degrees
your sun still shining
on me
still caught
in your colorful orbit

furniture shared
and letters traded

hardly a thing I own
without your mark

i’ve nurtured you
as you threw up bile

and you shed tears
when I bled my heart

your ways become mine
and my heart yours

the line that runs between us unbroken

the knocking doors and answered phones
have always been eager between us

some unbroken lineage
we have to fulfill

we both laugh at the prospect
and toss back another cup of fate

you tell me your stories
and I tell you mine

we blend together in this weave

and it’s too late
to pull us apart

Carmen the Chicken Killer by Sarah Curtiss

This is the story of my 2-month stay in Costa Rica a few years ago. It wasn’t my first trip. I had visited the year before with my partner, William Solis, who is from Costa Rica. But this particular year I wanted to learn Spanish. My initial plan was to take an immersion course in Mexico. However, William said that if I was going to immerse myself in a Spanish family it might as well be his. They don’t speak any English so I would be forced to speak Spanish and I could get to know them better. I told him that when I returned I would know more about him and his family than he did and so it has proven to be true. William joined me for the last 10 days. This is my journal plus emails I wrote to family and friends and a few comments from my current perspective…six years later. I drew a picture every day using pencil, pen, colored pencil, water colors, and acrylics. I wrote in my journal almost every day. I took photographs.
